When an EU Migrant’s family member arrives in the UK, there is an application process for residence documentation. The residence documentation is issued in accordance with The Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2006.
Residence Card Application
Residence Card Application’s are optional
It should be noted that, at the time of writing, completing a residence card application is optional. The residence card is merely for a confirmation of rights which exist under EU law.
However, it should also be noted that – although the application form is optional – you will find yourself having immense difficulties obtaining any services if you fail to apply for a residence card. The reason for this is mainly that the United Kingdom has substantial civil penalties for providing services to undocumented migrants. UK legislation requires proof of right of residence for everything from opening a bank account, to renting a house.
